How To Make Kimono

Japanese men and women have worn the kimono for centuries. Although it is made from a simple pattern, its beauty is seen in the fabrics that are chosen. Since the kimono is made from rectangles, it can be made without a pattern using only basic measurements. Once you understand the basics of how to make kimono, you can make changes to add detailed elements like a collar and cuffs, or use lots of fabrics.

Step 1

Measure the length of your body from the neck to the floor, the length of your arm from the shoulder to your wrist, and the width of your shoulders across the back. Write down these measurements.

Step 2

Multiply your body length by two and add 1 inch. Cut a large piece of fabric this length by the width of your shoulders plus 6 inches (30 cm).

Step 3

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, lining up the edges. Iron over the fold using a temperature hot enough to mark the fabric you’re working on. Open the fold and fold the fabric widthwise again, lining up the bottom and side edges.

Step 4

Decide which side you want to use as the front of the kimono. Cut along the mark from the bottom up until you reach the width fold line. Fold 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) from the cut opening along the front of the kimono on the wrong side of the fabric to form a hem, including the nape. Sew the hem.

Step 5

Cut two pieces of fabric for the sleeves with the distance between your shoulder and your wrist twice. Fold 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) on one long side of each sleeve to the wrong side of the fabric. Sew the fold to form a hem. Fold each sleeve in half widthwise with the pattern facing in. Iron the pleats to form a fold.

Step 6

Place one sleeve over the body fabric with the fabric wrong side out. Align the sleeve and body folds together and match the long, unsewn side of the sleeve to one side of the body. Pin the length of the sleeve to attach it to the body of the kimono. Sew the sleeve to the body the entire length of the sleeve. Repeat with the other sleeve on the other side.

Step 7

Turn the entire kimono inside out. Line up and pin the short wide sides of the sleeve bottoms and match the open edges of the body to each other along the sides. Sew a running seam on each side from the sleeve opening, turning at each shoulder and down the side.

Step 8

Fold 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) in the bottom edge of the kimono to the wrong side of the fabric. Sew the hem in place. Turn the entire kimono inside out to finish. For further more information you can see and take help through a visit from https://www.beautifulcng.com/
